An analytic model for peer to peer file sharing networks

چکیده

In this paper we introduce a random-graph based model for studying the evolution of ad hoc peer-to-peer (P2P) communities such as in Gnutella or Freenet. The proposed random graph model generates a nonuniform graph and provides control over the nodal degree distribution. We study basic properties such as reachability from a given node in the network using an analytical approach. The model can be used in conjunction with a simulation model to study detailed performance tradeoffs in a P2P filesharing network.

P2P Network Trust Management Survey

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...

The Virtual Commons: Why Free-Riding Can Be Tolerated in File Sharing Networks

Peer-to-peer networks have emerged as a popular alternative to traditional client-server architectures for the distribution of information goods. Recent academic studies have observed high levels of free-riding in various peer-to-peer networks, leading some to suggest the imminent collapse of these communities as a viable information sharing mechanism. Our research develops an analytic model to...

Efficient and scalable search on scale-free P2P networks

Unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) systems (e.g. Gnutella) are characterized by uneven distributions of node connectivity and file sharing. The existence of “hub” nodes that have a large number of connections and “generous” nodes that share many files significantly influences performance of information search over P2P file-sharing networks. In this paper, we present a novel Scalable Peerto-Peer Se...

Modeling of P2P File Sharing with a Level-Dependent QBD Process

In this paper we propose to analyze a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing system by means of a so-called level-dependent Quasi-Birth-and-Death (QBD) process. We consider the dissemination of a single file consisting of different segments and include a model for the upload queue management mechanism with peers competing for bandwidth. By applying an efficient matrix-analytic algorithm we evaluate th...

Performance Analysis of Peer-to-Peer Networks for File Distribution

Peer-to-peer networks have been commonly used for tasks such as file sharing or file distribution. We study a class of cooperative file distribution systems where a file is broken up into many chunks that can be downloaded independently. The different peers cooperate by mutually exchanging the different chunks of the file, each peer being client and server at the same time. While such systems a...
